The evergreen background makes the flowers of the redbud tree even more vibrant. It is important to consider the backgroup when placing plants in the garden.

This Ilex verticillata x serrata 'Sparkleberry' shines against its evergreen background.

This is an example of a another deciduous holly without the benefit of the evergreen backdrop.

The tall variegated grass shows its stuff against the dark background of the castor bean and other green plants in the vacinity. Otherwise the beautiful bloom heads of the grass would be nearly invisible.

This is my favorite groundcover planting in my garden. This is a lawn of dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana'). It was a chore to plant, but is so easy to care for...no mowing, pruning or grooming. I just keep the leaf litter blown off of it.

Don't forget to include restful areas of one plant. It is a necessary part of any garden.
